Turning Waste into Energy to Reclamation: A Look at SIG's Green Transformation
PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) is strengthening its commitment to environmental preservation by implementing integrated ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles within its business strategy. This is being done amid the growing urgency of global climate change issues.
SIG’s Corporate Secretary, Vita Mahreyni, emphasised that sustainability has now become a competitive advantage that drives innovation while maintaining the company’s operational stability. Concrete steps in this commitment are realised through increased utilisation of renewable energy and accelerated post-mining land reclamation.
“Through various strategic initiatives, SIG proves that sustainability performance can run in tandem with business performance, even strengthening the company’s operational resilience,” said Vita, quoted from her statement on Friday, 24 April 2026.
One of SIG’s main breakthroughs is the optimisation of alternative fuel use derived from industrial waste, biomass, to urban waste processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF). Throughout 2025, the utilisation of alternative fuels increased by 24% to 681,000 tonnes, equivalent to a reduction in coal use by up to 467,000 tonnes. This achievement also drove an increase in the thermal substitution rate to 9.77%.
In addition to contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the industry, this initiative also serves as a solution to waste problems while opening up new economic value, including for the agricultural sector through biomass utilisation.
SIG is also continuing to expand the use of clean energy through the installation of solar panels at various operational units and the utilisation of Waste-Heat Recovery Power Generation (WHRPG) technology to convert waste heat into electricity. These efforts have yielded results with a 21% reduction in Scope 1 GHG emission intensity compared to the 2010 baseline, and a 15% reduction in Scope 2 emissions compared to the 2019 baseline.
In the mining sector, SIG is implementing sustainable practices through ecosystem restoration and recovery. Up to 2025, the company has reclaimed 628 hectares of post-mining land spread across various operational areas.
This commitment has received recognition from the government through six PROPER Green awards in 2025 from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, achieved by several cement plants operated by SIG and its subsidiaries.
Looking ahead, SIG affirms that it will continue to accelerate the transformation of the building materials industry with a more efficient, innovative, and environmentally responsible approach.
