Turkey’s special envoy for the Armenia normalisation process, Serdar Kilic, described the opening of the Akhalkalaki-Kars railway line as a new step in trade relations between the two neighbouring countries. In a post on X on Sunday, Kilic referenced Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement that the railway line is now open for Armenia’s imports and exports. Kilic stated that the line’s opening is a crucial part of direct trade under the framework of Turkey-Armenia normalisation efforts, which have been marred by years of political and diplomatic tensions. ‘I hope this new step, which will also enhance four-way cooperation between Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia and significantly contribute to regional peace and stability, will benefit all involved nations,’ Kilic said. Meanwhile, Pashinyan called the railway opening a major development for Armenia’s economy and thanked the Turkish and Georgian governments for their cooperation. According to Pashinyan, Armenia now has rail access to Russia via Georgia and Azerbaijan, and to China via Russia and Kazakhstan, as reported by Anadolu and TRT World on Sunday, 24 May 2026. He added that the railway route through Turkey and Georgia would strengthen Armenia’s ties with the European Union. Additionally, Armenia hopes for further development of rail connectivity with Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Iran in the near future. The opening of the Akhalkalaki-Kars line is seen as a significant step in efforts to improve relations in the South Caucasus region, which has long been marked by geopolitical conflicts and border disputes.
