The government has declared three days of national mourning from 2-4 March 2026 following the death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno on Monday, 2 March. The government has requested that the public fly flags at half-mast during the three-day national mourning period, as outlined in Circular Letter No. B-02/M/S/TU.00.00/03/2026 from the State Secretariat dated 2 March 2026.

“In order to pay the highest tribute to the Sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, General TNI (Retired) Try Sutrisno, who passed away on 2 March 2026 in Jakarta,” stated the State Secretariat in its Instagram announcement.

Try Sutrisno passed away at Gatot Soebroto Military Hospital in Jakarta on Monday morning at 06:58 WIB. He was laid to rest at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in Jakarta, with President Prabowo Subianto presiding over the funeral ceremony.

The ceremony began with a formal report from the ceremony commander to President Prabowo, who served as the ceremony’s inspector, followed by the reading of a brief biography of the deceased. President Prabowo then led the reading of the Apel Persada (a ceremonial proclamation).

“I, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, on behalf of the nation, people, and Indonesian National Armed Forces, hereby present to the motherland the soul, body, and services of the late Try Sutrisno, Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the sixth term of office 1993-1998, and may his spirit find the best place beside God,” President Prabowo stated.

Try Sutrisno was born on 15 November 1935. He was a retired general who previously held the highest military command as Commander of the Armed Forces (now the Indonesian National Armed Forces). During the 1993-1998 period, he served as Vice President under Indonesia’s second President Suharto.
