US President Donald Trump has once again rattled the stability of the international defence alliance by threatening to withdraw from NATO. This stark warning followed allied nations’ rejection of his request to establish an international space police force to secure the Strait of Hormuz from Iran.

Through a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump asserted that US military forces have achieved tremendous success and no longer require assistance from anyone. He specifically named several strategic partners in his statement.

“Because of the fact that we have achieved tremendous military success, we no longer ‘need’ or want help from NATO countries — WE NEVER NEEDED IT! The same goes for Japan, Australia, or South Korea,” Trump wrote in a mix of capitalised and non-capitalised letters. He added emphatically, “WE DON’T NEED HELP FROM ANYONE!”

When questioned by media about the possibility of the US leaving NATO, Trump did not deny it. He stated that the option was something “worth considering” and claimed he had full authority without requiring congressional approval.

“That is certainly something we need to think about. I don’t need Congress for that decision,” Trump said. Although he stated he had no definite plans in the near term, he emphasised his deep disappointment with the slow response from allies.

The tension stems from the US effort to reopen an oil transit route through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked due to conflict with Iran. Trump viewed the allies’ refusal to participate in the security mission as a failure of commitment in an alliance he has long considered a burden on the US budget.
