The United States has launched strikes against Iranian military targets after Tehran attacked three US Navy destroyers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This latest escalation has raised concerns that the fragile ceasefire between the two countries could collapse, reigniting armed conflict in the Middle East. Citing Bloomberg on Friday (8/5/2026), US President Donald Trump emphasised that Washington would respond even more forcefully if Iran does not promptly accept the US-proposed peace agreement. Trump also stated that the ceasefire remains in effect despite the renewed mutual attacks, accusing Iran of “playing games” with the US. “They tried to mess with us today. We destroyed them,” Trump told reporters in Washington. “I’ll let you know if there’s no more ceasefire. You won’t need to be told; just look for the big light coming out of Iran,” he added. In retaliation, the US military struck several Iranian military facilities described as bases for missile and drone launches, including command centres and intelligence facilities. This latest tension occurs as the Trump administration seeks to end the war, now in its third month, which has killed thousands and triggered a global energy crisis. The US had previously proposed to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the conflict. The strategic shipping lane is one of the world’s main oil distribution routes. Uncertainty over the peace agreement has caused global financial markets to fluctuate. Stock exchanges weakened temporarily, and oil prices surged amid fears that the conflict could disrupt global energy distribution. Nevertheless, Trump remains optimistic that an agreement can still be reached soon. “It might not happen, but it could happen at any time. I’m sure they want the deal more than I do,” Trump said.
