US President Donald Trump announced that he would send 5,000 additional troops to Poland, after Washington had previously stated that the plan to deploy the forces had been cancelled amid pressure for Europe to defend itself independently. Quoting AFP, the surprise move was taken amid the administration’s ongoing effort to overhaul global defence strategy in light of the current geopolitical tensions.

Trump said the decision was based on his good relations with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, an ally described as nationalist. The president said he was very proud to have given full support to Nawrocki in the general election won by Nawrocki last year.

‘It gives me great pleasure to announce that the United States will send a further 5,000 troops to Poland,’ Trump said on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, 22 May 2026. While Trump did not provide further details on the technical aspects of the deployment, his comments seemed to refer to the deployment of several thousand US troops to Poland whose fate had been unsettled in recent days.

Last week, US military officials had said that the plan to deploy 4,000 troops to Poland had actually been cancelled by the White House. The unilateral cancellation was described as the latest step by Trump’s administration to cut overseas troop numbers while also punishing NATO allies, arguing that many European partners are not assisting the US in the war against Iran currently raging in the Middle East.

US Vice President JD Vance later clarified on Tuesday that the deployment of those 4,000 troops had actually only been postponed, not cancelled altogether. ‘The final decision hasn’t been made,’ he said. He added that Europe must be able to stand on its own two feet independently, without continually relying on the US. This statement underscored Trump’s push for European allies to bear a much larger share of budgetary and defence responsibilities.

Trump has long appeared determined to punish allied nations deemed not to provide full support in the Middle East wars. The US is also frustrated by the limited contributions of its allies to peacekeeping forces in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global sea lane currently effectively closed by Iran.

As concrete action, the Pentagon announced earlier this month that Washington would withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany after Chancellor Friedrich Merz made controversial remarks suggesting Iran had humiliated the United States at the negotiating table.
