The United States and Israel launched a joint military attack on Iran on 28 February, which disrupted global shipping lanes, triggered a surge in oil prices, and shook the world economy. US President Donald Trump stated on Friday (20/3/2026) that he is considering a “gradual reduction” (winding down) of US military operations against Iran, claiming that the main objectives are nearly achieved. “We are nearly achieving our goals as we consider reducing our major military efforts in the Middle East related to Iran,” Trump said via the social media platform Truth Social. Trump listed the operation’s objectives as including weakening Iran’s missile capabilities, destroying its defence industry bases, crippling its navy and air force, preventing nuclear development, and protecting US allies in the region. However, on Friday afternoon, Trump also emphasised that he does not want a ceasefire with Iran. “We can talk, but I don’t want a ceasefire,” Trump told reporters before departing the White House for Florida. “There is no ceasefire when you are really destroying the other side,” he added. He even claimed that Iran has lost almost its entire military strength. “From a military perspective, they are finished. They have no navy, no air force, nor equipment. They also have no radar or air defence systems,” Trump said. This statement was refuted by Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who assessed that the White House’s claims do not match the situation on the ground. “The US government says one thing, reality says another,” Araghchi wrote on the platform X. Trump also stated that the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy route, should be guarded by the countries that depend on it, while the US would only assist if requested. “The Strait of Hormuz must be secured by the countries that use it. The United States does not depend on that route. If asked, we will help, but it should not be necessary if the Iranian threat is eliminated,” Trump said, as reported by Xinhua on Saturday (21/3/2026).
