US President Donald Trump has responded to reports that Russia provided intelligence to Iran to help Tehran attack US military facilities in the Middle East. Trump said it is not important whether Russia sent intelligence to Iran.

AP reported on Sunday, 8 March 2026, that the president dismissed the significance of sharing the information after attending the funeral of six Army Reserve soldiers killed in a drone strike in Kuwait the day after the US and Israel launched war against Iran, a conflict that has unsettled the global economy.

Trump did not directly confirm the Associated Press report or other outlets’ reports that US intelligence officials believe Moscow provided such targeting information to Iran. But if Moscow did supply those details, he said, Iran would gain little from them.

“If you look at what has happened to Iran in the last week, if they have information, it does not help them much,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he flew to Miami, where he would spend the weekend.

The president also dismissed questions about how such Russian assistance to Iran could affect his view of US-Russia relations.

“They would say we did it to strike them,” Trump replied.

“Wouldn’t they say that we did it to strike them?” he added.

Earlier, fighting in the Middle East has surged since the United States and its ally Israel attacked Iranian territory. Separately in the war, Russia was reported to have provided intelligence to Iran to help Tehran attack US military assets in the region.

According to Euronews, on Saturday 7 March, two officials familiar with the intelligence reports said the information could be used by Iran to launch attacks on US targets in the Gulf region.

The same reports, carried by The Washington Post, stated that two US officials familiar with the matter said Russia is suspected of providing intelligence to Iran that could aid it in attacking warships, aircraft, and other US military assets in the Middle East.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss sensitive information publicly. However, US intelligence has not found evidence that Moscow directly instructed Iran on how to use the information in the ongoing conflict.

If proven, this would be the first indication that Russia has begun to become involved indirectly in the war that began after the joint US-Israeli strikes against Iran about a week earlier.

Russia Not Supplying Weapons to Iran

Meanwhile, the Kremlin or the Russian presidential office said it was not supplying weapons to its close ally, Iran, which is fighting against the US and Israel. The Kremlin said, as reported by Russian news agencies TASS and Reuters, on Friday 6 March, that Iran has not yet approached Moscow to request any assistance, including weapon supplies.

The Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday 5 March: “Regarding the current situation, there has been no request from Iran. Our position remains unchanged.”
