US President Donald Trump insists that Iran is participating in peace negotiations related to the war in the Middle East. Trump responded to Tehran’s statement refusing involvement in peace talks with the US. According to Trump, Iranian negotiators fear being killed by their own side.

“By the way, they are negotiating, and they really want to make a deal. But they’re afraid to say it, because they think they’ll be killed by their own people,” Trump said, as quoted by detikNews from AFP news agency on Thursday (26/3/2026).

“They also fear being killed by us,” Trump added.

Trump’s statement came after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that Tehran has no intention of negotiating with the US. Trump reiterated his claim that Iran is being “destroyed” in the Middle East conflict, even as Tehran maintains control over the crucial oil route in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump claimed that the Democratic Party is trying to divert attention from all of the US’s successes in military operations in the Middle East. Trump mocked the Democratic Party’s demands that he seek congressional approval for the conflict.

“They don’t like the word ‘war’, because you have to get approval, so I’ll use the term ‘military operation’,” Trump said.

Iran Reiterates Desire to Continue War

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is known to have stated that Tehran intends to continue the war and does not wish to negotiate with the US. Araghchi’s statement also refutes US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington has proposed a peace plan.

“Currently, our policy is the continuation of resistance,” Araghchi said on Thursday (26/3).

Araghchi emphasised that Tehran has no intention of negotiating with the US. He stated that Iran will continue its resistance.

“We have no intention of negotiating at this point, no negotiations are taking place, and I am confident that our position is fully principled,” he said.

“Talking about negotiation at this time would be an admission of defeat,” he concluded.
