Relations between the United States and China are heating up again amid plans for a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Although Trump described Xi as a ‘friend’ and someone he ‘knows very well’, the meeting is overshadowed by significant tensions regarding Iran, Taiwan, and the global influence war between Washington and Beijing. Trump stated that he wants to discuss the conflict involving Iran, a country that has long been accused by the United States and Israel of receiving political and economic support from China. This issue has become increasingly sensitive because the war and tensions in the Middle East are no longer seen merely as regional conflicts but also as part of the rivalry between the world’s major powers. At the same time, the Chinese Embassy in Washington issued a harsh warning to the United States, emphasising four ‘red lines’ that must not be crossed in relations between the two countries, as reported by RT and Xinhua. The four issues are as follows: First, Taiwan. Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in China-US relations because Beijing considers the island to be part of China’s sovereign territory. The Chinese government has repeatedly emphasised that reunification with Taiwan is a non-negotiable national interest. Therefore, any political, military, or diplomatic support from the United States to Taiwan is regarded by Beijing as direct interference in China’s internal affairs. Tensions have escalated in recent years after the United States strengthened its ties with Taiwan through arms sales, security cooperation, and high-level official visits. Washington officially still recognises the ‘One China’ policy, but at the same time continues to assist Taiwan’s defence against potential military pressure from Beijing. China views these actions as an attempt by the US to contain the rise of its influence in the Indo-Pacific. For President Xi Jinping, Taiwan is not just a geopolitical issue but also concerns political legitimacy and domestic nationalism in China. Therefore, Beijing has made the Taiwan issue a ‘red line’ that must not be crossed in dialogues with US President Donald Trump. Taiwan is currently one of the most dangerous flashpoints in the US-China rivalry because it has the potential to trigger direct conflict between the world’s two largest powers.
