US President Donald Trump has once again voiced his complaints about the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) defence alliance. Trump complained that NATO allies are not helping the US at all in countering Iran, which he called a “mad country” and “militarily destroyed.”

“The USA does not need anything from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important moment,” Trump said in a statement via the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Friday (27/3/2026).

During a cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday (26/3), Trump stated that the US was “very disappointed” with NATO.

“I will say it openly. We are very disappointed with NATO, because NATO is doing absolutely nothing,” Trump said in his criticism.

He argued that NATO “would never” come to the US’s rescue.

“I said 25 years ago that NATO is a paper tiger, but more importantly, that we would come to save them, but they would never come to save us,” he stated.

In recent days, Trump has called on US allies, as well as US rivals including China, to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy supplies.

As a result of the war, transit activity in the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively restricted since early March. This has triggered global disruptions that have increased shipping costs and pushed global oil prices higher.

Several European countries have rejected Trump’s calls, stating that the Iran conflict is a war started by Trump without consulting US allies.

Previously, Trump also asserted that the US does not need NATO and described the alliance’s stance as a “very stupid mistake.” However, Trump said he has no plans to withdraw the US from the defence alliance, although he described it as a viable option to consider.

Trump has long criticised NATO, and during his first term, according to several statements from White House officials, he openly considered withdrawing the US from the post-war Western alliance.
