Trump Claims Many Nations Deploying Warships to Strait of Hormuz
US President Donald Trump announced that multiple nations will deploy warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz. The vital shipping corridor, which carries approximately 20 per cent of global oil supplies, has become the focal point of confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, 14 March, Trump claimed that a global coalition is being formed to counter Iran’s efforts to close the strait.
“Many nations, especially those affected by Iran’s attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz, will send Warships, together with the US, to keep the Strait open and safe,” Trump wrote.
Trump’s statement was notably aggressive in tone. He emphasised that he would not hesitate to deploy full military force to ensure stability of the maritime corridor.
“The US will bomb the coastlines extensively and continue firing at Iranian boats and ships from those waters. One way or another, we will soon make the Strait of Hormuz OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!” he asserted.
Earlier, on Friday, 13 March, Trump confirmed to reporters that the US Navy would soon begin direct escort missions for tanker ships transiting the sensitive strait. “That will be done very soon,” he said briefly.
Iran’s Response: “Consequences of US Aggression”
Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, called for the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. In remarks on Thursday, 12 March, Khamenei promised to open a new front in the conflict against the US and Israel.
In line with his leader, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, countered that Washington is responsible for regional instability. According to him, the escalating situation in the Strait of Hormuz is a direct consequence of destabilisation and aggression by the United States against Iran’s sovereignty.
