US President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to revoke protection for Syrian immigrants. It is known that there are approximately 6,000 Syrian citizens residing in the United States.

As reported by Reuters on Thursday (26/2/2026), the US Department of Justice has asked the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling by a judge in November 2025 that blocked the US government’s attempt to end the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian citizens.

This is the third time the US government has sought the Supreme Court’s assistance regarding efforts to end protection for immigrants. The US Supreme Court has sided with the US government on the previous two occasions, which involved the revocation of TPS for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan citizens.

TPS is a designation under US law for migrants from countries affected by war, natural disasters, or other calamities, who require protection. Individuals granted this status are protected from deportation and are allowed to work in the United States.

The US Department of Homeland Security has been attempting to end TPS for 12 countries, including Syria. Similar lawsuits have resulted in court rulings that currently prevent the termination of TPS for citizens from countries including Ethiopia, South Sudan, Haiti, Syria, and Myanmar.
