Trisakti to construct new campus in E. Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP) : Trisakti University is going to build a new campus in East Jakarta as its campus in West Jakarta can no longer accommodate the academic activities.
Rector Moedanton Moertedjo told reporters in a press conference here yesterday, which was held to announce the 30th anniversary of the university, that the 120-hectare campus in Grogol is too small for 27,000 students.
That is the main reason why the university will build the new campus in Nagrak, East Jakarta, he said.
"We have to expand the campus due to the increasing number of freshmen here every year," he added, "This shows that parents trust us, and like to send their children here."
So far, Trisakti University has three campuses in the city, two in Grogol, and one on Jl. A. Yani, East Jakarta.
According to Moedanton, the new campus will cover an area of 120 hectares, not including the 50 hectare plot which is allotted for the teachers housing complex.
"We won't move the whole campus to Nagrak," he said, "We'll still use campus A in Grogol for post-graduate study and campus B for the school of medicine."
The development of the new campus is planned to be completed in five years. As soon as the site is ready, activities will be concentrated there, he said.
However, he refused to reveal the budget for the new campus project.
Moedanton said in order to keep up with progress in science and technology, the university plans to set up a school for basic sciences and a school of mathematics and natural sciences. "We are working together with the Bandung Institute of Technology in this project," he added.
"Civil engineering will have a new department," he said, "We'll set up the planology department in the school."
Another new department will be the information department.
In order to support the students' needs, especially in the fields of technology and computing, the university will link up to the Internet, a world-wide computer network.
"An advantage of having the network here is that the university will have the access to other institutions' network, both governmental and private, here and abroad," he added.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, which falls on Nov. 29, the university will have an open University Senate meeting on Nov. 30.
Other activities will include seminars, musical performances and an exhibition of students' work. (10/05)
