Trisakti to construct new campus in E. Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP) : Trisakti University is going to build a new
\ncampus in East Jakarta as its campus in West Jakarta can no
\nlonger accommodate the academic activities.<\/p>\n
Rector Moedanton Moertedjo told reporters in a press
\nconference here yesterday, which was held to announce the 30th
\nanniversary of the university, that the 120-hectare campus in
\nGrogol is too small for 27,000 students.<\/p>\n
That is the main reason why the university will build the new
\ncampus in Nagrak, East Jakarta, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We have to expand the campus due to the increasing number of
\nfreshmen here every year,\" he added, \"This shows that parents
\ntrust us, and like to send their children here.\"<\/p>\n
So far, Trisakti University has three campuses in the city,
\ntwo in Grogol, and one on Jl. A. Yani, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to Moedanton, the new campus will cover an area of
\n120 hectares, not including the 50 hectare plot which is allotted
\nfor the teachers housing complex.<\/p>\n
\"We won't move the whole campus to Nagrak,\" he said, \"We'll
\nstill use campus A in Grogol for post-graduate study and campus B
\nfor the school of medicine.\"<\/p>\n
The development of the new campus is planned to be completed
\nin five years. As soon as the site is ready, activities will be
\nconcentrated there, he said.<\/p>\n
However, he refused to reveal the budget for the new campus
\nproject.<\/p>\n
Moedanton said in order to keep up with progress in science
\nand technology, the university plans to set up a school for basic
\nsciences and a school of mathematics and natural sciences. \"We
\nare working together with the Bandung Institute of Technology in
\nthis project,\" he added.<\/p>\n
\"Civil engineering will have a new department,\" he said,
\n\"We'll set up the planology department in the school.\"<\/p>\n
Another new department will be the information department.<\/p>\n
In order to support the students' needs, especially in the
\nfields of technology and computing, the university will link up
\nto the Internet, a world-wide computer network.<\/p>\n
\"An advantage of having the network here is that the
\nuniversity will have the access to other institutions' network,
\nboth governmental and private, here and abroad,\" he added.<\/p>\n
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, which falls on Nov. 29,
\nthe university will have an open University Senate meeting on
\nNov. 30.<\/p>\n
Other activities will include seminars, musical performances
\nand an exhibition of students' work. (10\/05)<\/p>",
