The trial in the alleged corruption case concerning the procurement of Chromebooks was postponed after Nadiem Makarim, the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology and a defendant in the case, complained of illness before the proceedings could begin.

Prosecutor Roy Riady from the Attorney General’s Office revealed that based on a physical examination on Tuesday morning and laboratory results, Nadiem’s condition was within normal limits with no fever.

“This means that, in conclusion, Mr Nadiem is actually in good health and was permitted to leave the hospital temporarily to attend the trial proceedings,” the prosecutor stated during the session at the Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday, 5 May 2026.

However, when the prosecutors were about to escort Nadiem to the trial, the former minister complained of pain in his back. Upon confirmation with the doctor treating Nadiem, the prosecutor noted that the doctor described the complaint as highly subjective.

As a result, the prosecutors were unable to present Nadiem at the trial today. Nevertheless, the prosecutor added that Nadiem has committed to attending the next session on Wednesday, 6 May 2026, which is scheduled for the examination of defence witnesses and experts.

Nadiem Makarim’s legal counsel, Zaid Mushafi, appreciated the prosecutors’ swift action in taking his client to the Emergency Department (IGD) after he fell ill following the previous session on Monday evening.

“Indeed, he was immediately taken to the IGD last night by the prosecutorial team, and we greatly appreciate that, allowing for appropriate treatment,” Zaid said at the Corruption Court in Jakarta.

He explained that Nadiem reported feeling pain in his back this morning, despite checks on his heart rate and temperature yielding normal results.

Therefore, according to Zaid, with today’s trial postponed to Wednesday, they would first assess the client’s condition and provide maximum treatment today to ensure he can participate effectively in the proceedings.

In response to the statements from Nadiem’s legal team, Presiding Judge Purwanto Abdullah confirmed that the trial would commence the following day at 10:00 WIB, taking Nadiem’s condition into account.
