Extreme weather is expected to occur across 29 districts in Central Java on Monday, 16 March, with tidal flooding (rob) continuing to affect northern waters. Residents are being urged to prepare for hydrometeorogical disasters including landslides, flooding and whirlwinds.

Weather conditions in Central Java are forecast to be clear and partly cloudy in the morning. However, from midday through the early evening, light to moderate rainfall is expected to fall across the region, with extreme weather—heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning strikes—potentially affecting 29 districts in the Solo Raya region, Pantura (North Coast), and central and eastern sections of Central Java.

Wave heights in Central Java’s waters remain relatively safe for shipping activities. However, tidal flooding (rob) with maximum heights of 1 metre between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM will continue to affect northern waters, potentially causing flooding in several Pantura districts that could disrupt residents’ activities.

“Be vigilant about hydrometeorogical disasters, as extreme weather is expected to occur across 29 districts in Central Java,” said Farita Rachmawati, a weather forecaster at the Ahmad Yani Meteorological Station, on Monday, 16 March.

According to Rachmawati, the districts in Central Java with potential for extreme weather include Cilacap, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, Kebumen, Purworejo, Wonosobo, Mungkid, Boyolali, Klaten, Sukoharjo, Wonogiri, Karanganyar, Sragen, Grobogan, Blora, Ungaran, Temanggung, Kendal, Batang, Kajen, Pemalang, Slawi, Magelang, Surakarta, Salatiga, Bumiayu, Majenang and Ambarawa.

Remaining areas of Central Java will experience light to moderate rainfall, with winds blowing from the west to north at speeds of 10-30 kilometres per hour, air temperatures ranging from 18-32 degrees Celsius and humidity levels between 60-95 per cent. “Residents, particularly those travelling for Eid celebrations who are still in transit, should be vigilant about these extreme weather conditions,” she added.

Retna Swasti Karini, a weather forecaster at the Tanjung Emas Maritime Station in Semarang, stated that although wave heights in northern Central Java waters of 0.5-1.25 metres remain relatively safe for shipping, residents in the Pantura region of Central Java are urged to remain cautious about flooding resulting from continuing tidal flooding.

According to Retna Swasti Karini, flooding caused by tidal surge will inundate residential areas in the Pantura coastal zone with water levels potentially exceeding 1 metre, and will also disrupt residents’ activities such as transportation, cargo loading and unloading at ports, aquaculture and salt farming.
