Transport Ministry Survey: 50 Per Cent of Population to Return Home This Year
The Ministry of Transport released survey results on population movement during Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri celebrations in 2026. The survey recorded that over 140 million residents plan to undertake the mudik tradition.
“Based on movement survey results, 50.60 per cent of Indonesia’s population, equivalent to 143.91 million people, will undertake mudik,” said Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi during a working meeting with the DPR’s Commission V on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.
Purwagandhi continued, noting that this figure represents a decrease of approximately 1.75 per cent compared to the previous year’s survey, which recorded 146 million mudik participants. However, he noted that survey predictions do not necessarily remain constant. For example, in 2025, the survey recorded 146 million mudik participants, yet actual field data showed an increase reaching 154 million people.
“Public mobility during the Eid season is extremely high,” he stated.
The Ministry of Transport also predicted which transport modes mudik participants would utilise. The predictions indicated a continued high tendency towards motorcycle usage this year.
He stated that approximately 76.24 million people are estimated to use private cars; 23.34 million will use buses; and 24.08 million will use motorcycles.
He continued, noting that 50.63 million people using buses and private cars are predicted to utilise toll roads, whilst 8.65 million motorcycle users are expected to select alternative routes.
“This therefore has the potential to increase congestion on arterial routes and inter-regional connectors,” Purwagandhi said.
Based on the Transport Ministry’s assessment, West Java becomes the region with the largest mudik movement this year, reaching 30.97 million people, followed by East Java and Jakarta.
Regarding mudik destination flows, the Transport Ministry recorded the largest movement heading towards the Central Java region at 38.71 million people.
