Transit project pact accepted
BANGKOK (AFP): A leading Thai environmentalist has accepted a court brokered disclosure agreement and withdrawn a lawsuit that sought to block construction of a mass transit system in Bangkok, a statement seen yesterday said.
Chodchoy Sophonpanich accepted the agreement proposed on Thursday by the Civil Court here and dropped the suit against the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, according to the statement released by her office.
The agreement requires BMA and the private Bangkok Transit System Corp. (BTSC) to give Chodchoy details about the 24- kilometer (14.9-mile), $1. 3-billion elevated rail system that BTSC is building in the capital.
Among other things, the city administration must reveal what effects the construction and operation of the system will have on the environment and on Bangkok residents. Chodchoy, president of the Thai Environmental Association, had been joined in the suit by 74 other plaintiffs.
