Trains for everyone!
Trains for everyone!
From Kompas
In relation to the underground transit system to connect Blok M and Kota downtown in Jakarta I would like to ask a question. Who is this system for? If it is meant for wholesale traders and buyers, these people are not living on this line.
Trains are meant to be affordable transportation, although an executive carriage is often attached which is more expensive. For example, on the Jakarta-Bandung train, a passenger traveling in the executive carriage is charged Rp 25,000. But the Jakarta- Banjar train, running on the same track and covering a distance twice that of Jakarta-Bandung, costs only Rp 5,000. Less fortunate people have benefited from the existence of "ordinary" trains.
A ticket on the Jakarta underground transit system is expected to cost Rp 1,800. This would be a disaster for low paid workers. We do not need to follow Singapore's example. Singapore has a very limited space and workers there have the capability of paying the fares. I think the project should be canceled considering the huge costs involved and lack of supporting factors.
