Trade Minister Launches Indonesia-Uzbekistan FTA Negotiations
Jakarta — Indonesia’s Trade Minister Budi Santoso and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade Laziz Kudratov launched free trade agreement negotiations between Indonesia and Uzbekistan (Indonesia-Uzbekistan FTA) online in Jakarta on Monday.
The launch was marked by the signing of a joint statement by both ministers via video conference. Additionally, they signed the Agreement on Trade and Investment Cooperation.
“The launch of Indonesia-Uzbekistan FTA negotiations today marks an important step in strengthening trade and investment cooperation between our two countries. We are optimistic that this agreement will become a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” said Budi.
The negotiation initiative reflects both nations’ vision of building increasingly close, open, and sustainable economic partnerships amid global economic dynamics.
Budi hopes the Indonesia-Uzbekistan FTA will bring benefits including expanded market access for each country’s flagship products, strengthened value chains, and genuine opportunities for businesses including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to him, Indonesia’s negotiating team will work optimally and constructively to complete negotiations on schedule whilst safeguarding national interests.
Trade Minister Budi also appreciated Minister Kudratov for strengthening both countries’ potential on a solid cooperation foundation.
In addition to launching the Indonesia-Uzbekistan FTA negotiations, Budi and Minister Kudratov also signed the Trade and Investment Cooperation Agreement. This agreement will establish a Joint Working Group.
In 2025, Indonesia-Uzbekistan bilateral trade reached USD 181.4 million. This figure grew 48.9 per cent over the past five years (2021-2025), reflecting increased confidence among business communities in both countries.
This growth also underscores the importance of building a more structured framework to leverage existing potential.
