Batam is increasingly affirming its transformation from a manufacturing industrial area into a digital investment centre in Southeast Asia. This is marked by the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement at the Balairung Sari of the Batam Development Agency (BP) Batam, on Friday (17/4/2026).

The agreement between PT PLN Batam and PT Digitalland Service One (DayOne) covers the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a data centre with a capacity of 511 mega volt ampere (MVA) or equivalent to 450 megawatt (MW), making it the largest in Indonesia.

Head of BP Batam and Mayor of Batam Amsakar Achmad stated that infrastructure readiness and regulatory ease are the main keys in attracting global investor interest.

According to him, the integration of land availability, legal certainty, and energy reliability under the auspices of BP Batam creates a competitive ecosystem at the regional level.

Amsakar emphasised that BP Batam is committed to providing a conducive investment climate through accelerated permitting and the provision of integrated supporting infrastructure.

Through the support of BP Batam and PT PLN Batam, the development of this data centre is designed as a high-performance platform to support artificial intelligence (AI)-based computing and cloud computing services in the Asia-Pacific region.

DayOne Chief Executive Officer Jamie Khoo revealed that the administrative ease facilitated by BP Batam was a crucial factor in the company’s expansion decision.

“This expansion is an important milestone in our strategy to build one of Asia’s leading digital infrastructure platforms, including the Singapore-Johor-Batam (SIJORI) model that connects the three regions into the first truly integrated cross-border data centre platform in Southeast Asia,” he explained.

In addition to the electricity aspect, BP Batam is also promoting the use of clean energy to support industrial sustainability.

This is realised through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between BP Batam and PT PLN Batam regarding the development of a solar power plant (PLTS) with a capacity of over 200 megawatt peak (MWp) in the BP Batam working area.

This green energy initiative is one of the largest in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and is expected to add value for investors who prioritise global sustainability standards.

DayOne’s expansion in the Kabil area also continues the success of the previous project in Nongsa Digital Park (NDP).

This synergy is not just about cables and servers. With the giant energy capacity managed by PLN Batam and regulatory support from BP Batam, the project is predicted to create a massive economic domino effect.
