The phenomenon of career switching among Generation Z is becoming increasingly apparent. Graduates from renowned state universities (PTN) and top private universities (PTS) are no longer guaranteed jobs that align linearly with their educational backgrounds.

Amid rapid and disruptive industrial changes, companies are placing greater emphasis on skills, practical competencies, and adaptability rather than merely the prestige of one’s alma mater.

This shift in the job landscape is driven by technological advancements, digitalisation, and the dynamic needs of data-based industries. Many Gen Z individuals end up switching professions to survive while also pursuing work-life balance.

Not a few bachelor’s degree holders are working in fields entirely different from their majors because the competencies they possess do not fully align with market demands.

This situation serves as an alarm for the world of higher education to undertake curriculum transformation. The industry now seeks talent with digital capabilities, data analysis, communication, problem-solving, and relevant, proven competency certifications.

In response to this phenomenon, Sopian Wira Hadi, Coordinator of Marketing and Communication at Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM), emphasised that universities must be responsive to evolving industry needs.

“The phenomenon of career switching among Gen Z shows that the job world no longer looks solely at degrees but at real skills and portfolios. Campuses must ensure that students not only graduate but are also job-ready and relevant to industry needs,” Sopian stated in a written release on Thursday (26/3/2026).

He added that UNM, as a Digital Business Campus, has anticipated these challenges by equipping students through industry-based curricula, strengthening hard and soft skills, and recognised competency certifications.

Students at UNM receive not only theory but also professional certifications and practical experience. “Additionally, we have the Nusa Mandiri Career Center (NCC), which serves as a hub for career development, training, and access to job vacancy information so that graduates are better prepared to face global competition,” he explained.

Through this approach, UNM is committed to producing adaptive, competent graduates capable of transforming amid the dynamics of Industry 4.0 and the digital economy. Career switching is not merely a trend but a reflection that competency relevance is the key factor.
