Tono's sentencing delayed

JAKARTA: Prosecutors failed to demand a sentence for former
East Timor Military commander Brig. Gen. Tono Suratman on
Wednesday, saying they were unprepared.

"We have yet to complete a demand," chief prosecutor Gabriel
Simangungsong told the human rights court hearing, presided over
by judge Andi Samsan Nganro.

The court had given the prosecutors two weeks to prepare the
demand.

Andi adjourned the hearing until Monday.

Tono is accused of failing to prevent his subordinates
from allowing a mob to attack a church and the residence of
independence leader Manuel Carrascalao in Dili in April 1999.

The rights tribunal tried 16 people for their involvement in
gross human rights violations in East Timor in 1999. Eleven of
them were acquitted. -- JP
