Tokyo Electric's relocation
TOKYO (AFP): Japan's Tokyo Electric Co. Ltd. plans to shift most of its computing scale and bar code printer production to plants in Indonesia and Singapore within the next three years, a spokesman said yesterday.
The point of the move is to make the products' prices more competitive, the spokesman said.
The yen's recent appreciation has pushed up domestic production costs and made exports from Japan less profitable, he added.
The company recently began manufacturing computing scales at its Indonesian subsidiary and aimed to raise output to 5,000 units a month by March 1995 and shift total production there within three years, the spokesman said.
It also expects to produce 4,000 bar code printers a month at its Singapore subsidiary and shift all production there in three years, he adde.
