Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department (Sudin SDA Jaksel) is conducting dredging of mud and waste in the Cideng River along the Jalan Patra Kuningan segment, which crosses Tebet and Setiabudi sub-districts, to prevent flooding.

“This dredging is carried out as a maintenance effort and to increase the river’s flow capacity, reducing sedimentation and supporting flood prevention in South Jakarta,” said the Head of Sudin SDA Jakarta Selatan, Santo, in Jakarta on Monday.

The dredging, he said, began in September 2025 to anticipate shallowing. To date, 2,428 cubic metres of mud and waste sediment have been lifted.

He explained that the dredging is ongoing, with four units of heavy equipment and five transport trucks (dump trucks) deployed. Each truck has a carrying capacity of around five to eight cubic metres per trip.

“We are deploying all our resources optimally to accelerate the dredging process and ensure maximum results,” Santo stated.

Santo urged the public to help maintain environmental cleanliness by not disposing of waste into waterways or rivers, and not encroaching on river basin areas (DAS).

“We target the dredging to be completed this year. For that, we hope for public support in keeping the environment clean,” Santo revealed.

Sudin SDA Jaksel assesses that dredging rivers and open channels has proven effective in speeding up flood recession by up to three hours in several areas.

The dredging is intended to increase the water flow capacity of the main river, so that discharge from upstream areas or densely populated regions can be accommodated more optimally.

Meanwhile, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has allocated a budget of Rp3.64 trillion for flood control and Rp18.25 billion for the flood control system in the 2026 Fiscal Year (TA).
