To Drive Energy Transition, PJT II Prepares Floating Solar Power Plants in Strategic Reservoirs
Perum Jasa Tirta II (PJT II) is promoting the development of floating solar power plants (PLTS) at several reservoirs as part of efforts to strengthen national energy resilience and accelerate the transition to new renewable energy (EBT).
PJT II’s President Director Imam Santoso stated that utilising reservoirs for floating PLTS is one strategy to optimise water resource assets while providing a clean and sustainable energy source. He made this remark while receiving a specific working visit from the House of Representatives Commission VI at PJT II’s head office in Purwakarta, West Java, on Wednesday (15/4/2026).
According to Imam, PJT II has significant potential in renewable energy development that can be optimised further, particularly through PLTS on reservoir surfaces.
“PJT II has substantial potential in new renewable energy development, including by utilising reservoir areas for floating PLTS. This forms part of our contribution to strengthening national energy resilience while preserving environmental sustainability,” said Imam.
In the short term, PLTS development will focus on optimising existing potential, including increasing plant capacity and developing floating PLTS at strategic reservoirs. In the medium to long term, PJT II targets strengthening its clean energy portfolio through integrating various EBT sources, such as solar and hydropower.
Nevertheless, PLTS and renewable energy development in Indonesia still faces several challenges. Imam acknowledged that the variability of solar energy sources is one technical obstacle that needs to be anticipated, alongside the need for adequate supporting infrastructure.
On the other hand, the relatively large investment requirements also pose a unique challenge in accelerating the realisation of clean energy projects. Integrating EBT plants into the national electricity system requires careful planning to maintain the reliability of electricity supply.
“PLTS development is an important part of the national energy transition journey. Therefore, we continue to strengthen coordination with various stakeholders and adopt adaptive technology so that field implementation can run effectively and sustainably,” said Imam.
To address these challenges, PJT II is partnering with PT PLN Nusantara Power to develop a roadmap for integrated renewable energy development aligned with national electricity system needs.
PT PLN Nusantara Power’s President Director Ruli Firmansyah views inter-company synergy as key to accelerating clean energy development while maintaining national electricity system reliability.
“The collaboration between PJT II and PLN Nusantara Power is an important part of building a reliable energy ecosystem. With this synergy, we are optimistic about supporting national energy resilience sustainably,” said Ruli.
In addition to strengthening collaboration, PJT II is preparing mitigation steps through enhancing human resource capacity, strengthening operational monitoring systems, and comprehensive risk management.
Through floating PLTS development and cross-sector synergy strengthening, PJT II targets a greater contribution to driving a robust, efficient, and sustainable national energy system in the future.
