To Combat Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health Supports Nutri-Level Labelling on Packaging
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has stated its full support for the implementation of Nutri-Level labelling on packaged food and beverage products as a strategic step to curb non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Director of Non-Communicable Diseases at Kemenkes, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, emphasised that this policy is mandated by Government Regulation (PP) No. 28 of 2024.
“This is part of the implementation of NCD control through front-of-pack labelling (FOPL) policy. We strongly support it,” said Nadia on Wednesday (8/4).
She explained that the technical aspects of Nutri-Level labelling fall under the authority of the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), particularly regarding regulations on packaging and processed food products.
Previously, BPOM signed a draft revision of the BPOM Regulation on Nutritional Value Information on Processed Food Labels. This revision strengthens efforts to control NCDs by reducing consumption of sugar, salt, and fat (GGL), the three main triggers of chronic diseases in Indonesia.
The revision includes provisions for displaying Nutri-Level on the front of the packaging or front-of-pack nutrition labelling (FOPNL).
Nutri-Level is a nutritional labelling system designed to provide simple and easily understandable information, helping the public quickly select healthier products.
This policy is expected not only to increase consumer awareness but also to encourage the food industry to offer products with better nutritional compositions.
