Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said the government would import 50,000 head of cattle from Brazil to fill the cattle farming ecosystem. ‘What is clear is that Brazil has already come for cattle, yes. The plan is 50,000 to 100,000 head,’ Amran said when he was at the Bulog Warehouse Complex of the DKI & Banten regional office, North Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 February 2026. Amran did not specify whether the cattle would be imported for dairy production or meat processing. He only said that some of the cattle from Brazil had already arrived in the country. According to Amran, the cattle farming ecosystem is being built at five sites, one of which is in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The project is now entering the construction phase. ‘It has started moving, has already broken ground. Already, five sites. In NTB,’ Amran said. The two farms will raise and manage 67,000 head of cattle, some of which are dairy cattle. Amran said the project will be funded by the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara). ‘One package from farm to fork is Rp 2.4 trillion,’ Amran said. The farms will also be equipped with pasture land for feed. ‘The feed is being prepared; there are cattle, dairy cattle,’ he said. The cattle farming project originated from President Prabowo Subianto’s order to his subordinates to meet the milk needs of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme. Prabowo conveyed the order in a limited meeting at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Thursday, 11 November. The government plans to build cattle farms on 500,000 hectares with a production of 3 million litres of milk per day.
