TNT, Schenker strike new Asia-Pacific deal
JAKARTA (JP): TNT Express Worldwide, the Amsterdam-based
courier service firm, announced yesterday a new deal with the
freight forwarding company Schenker International AG of Germany
allowing the latter to tap the former's facilities for its
services in the Asia-Pacific region.
The cooperation agreement was forged by TNT's Indonesian
affiliate PT Skypak International and Schenker's forwarding
partner PT Petrolog Transkontinen Utama.
"The deal will, then, allow the Frankfurt-based Schenker
International and Petrolog to have full access to TNT services by
using all its shipping facilities and distribution networks in
the region," Skypak's senior technical advisor, Rod Lancaster,
told reporters during a luncheon yesterday.
"With TNT's Asian Air Express network, Schenker can now use
our three existing airplanes serving Jakarta, Singapore, Manila,
Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei for its forwarding services," he
said.
The deal also allows Schenker to use TNT's other services
outside the region, he said.
Lancaster told The Jakarta Post that Schenker, which has been
working with Petrolog for 20 years, will be able to strengthen
its business in the region after two new TNT aircraft commence
operation in June or July.
"The new airplanes will expand our services to Beijing,
Shanghai and some cities in India and Vietnam," he said.
In return
In return, TNT will be allowed to use Petrolog's sea freight
services. TNT will have full access to all Schenker's networks,
covering Africa, Australia, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, the
United States, Latin America and Southeast Asia, Petrolog's
president, Moetaryanto, said.
As part of the deal, the parties have also agreed to exchange
information on the market and the forwarding business.
Lancaster said the cooperation would foster TNT's revenues
from courier services by around 20 percent per annum.
TNT launched an overnight courier service in the region last
year, guaranteeing the delivery of documents, parcels and cargo
within 24 hours.
TNT, which operates in more than 200 countries, posted a total
turnover in worldwide services of US$1.5 billion in 1992-93, up
from around $1.06 billion in 1991-92.
TNT is owned by TNT Ltd., an Australian transportation
conglomerate, and GD Net BV, a consortium of the post offices of
Germany, France, Sweden, the Netherlands and Canada.(fhp)
