The TNI Habema Regional Command (Koops TNI Habema) carried out a humanitarian operation by evacuating a local resident in need of emergency medical assistance in the Ugimba area, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua, on Sunday (9/8/2026). The swift action was taken because the resident’s location was far from settlements and difficult to reach by land.

The resident was discovered while Koops TNI Habema personnel were conducting routine patrols and area monitoring. Realising that the resident required immediate treatment, soldiers on the ground decided to carry out an air evacuation to ensure the resident’s safety.

The rescue mission was not without challenges. The Ugimba area is known for its difficult geography, extreme weather changes and a dynamic security situation. In that area, the activities of the OPM group Kodap VIII/Kemabu led by Guspi Waker remain a serious concern because they frequently cause unrest and carry out attacks against security forces.

To speed up the rescue amid limited access, Koops TNI Habema deployed air assets and trained personnel. The Head of Information for Koops TNI Habema, M. Wirya Arthadiguna, S.H., M.Si., stressed that the evacuation was a concrete demonstration of the TNI’s commitment to upholding humanitarian values in its areas of operation.

“TNI soldiers are not only present to maintain regional security, but also to provide protection, assistance and a sense of safety to communities in need. Public safety is the top priority in every step of a soldier’s service in the field,” said Wirya.

Upon arrival in Sugapa District, the resident was handed over to Misael Sondegau, Head of the Intan Jaya Regency Conflict Handling Team. This follow-up coordination was carried out to ensure the resident received appropriate support and medical treatment.

The success of this mission proves that difficult terrain and security risks do not prevent Koops TNI Habema soldiers from being present for the community. For the TNI, safeguarding sovereignty also means ensuring that no resident faces hardship alone in remote areas.
