REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAGELANG – Indonesian Armed Forces Chief General Agus Subiyanto highlighted the evolving global strategic environment, still marked by various conflicts in several world regions, particularly in the Gulf area. This includes the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in other areas that could potentially affect global stability.

General Agus stressed the importance of national vigilance and strengthening synergy among all components of the nation, including local governments and regional legislative councils (DPRD), in facing these global challenges. According to him, the TNI’s role is not only to safeguard national sovereignty but also to support the acceleration of regional development through cooperation with local governments.

He encouraged active collaboration between the TNI and DPRD at the local level to bolster national resilience while improving community welfare. “Please involve the TNI in developing your regions to accelerate development and prosper the people,” he stated during the Regional Leadership Enhancement Course (KPPD) for Chairmen of DPRDs across Indonesia at the Military Academy in Magelang City on Sunday (19/4/2026).

Agus conveyed that the strengthening of the defence structure is currently being carried out through the establishment of new units. This includes plans to form 37 Military Area Commands (Kodam), 15 Naval Area Commands (Kodaeral), and eight Marine Forces (Pasmar) in various regions of Indonesia.

In addition, he continued, the TNI is developing the formation of new battalions gradually. According to Agus, the target is to build 150 Territorial Infantry Development Battalions (Yonif TP) each year as part of defence strengthening and support for regional development.

Agus explained that Yonif TP are designed not only for defence functions but also to play a role in supporting community productive activities. These include agriculture, livestock, fisheries, construction, and health services.

“This aligns with the TNI’s duties in Military Operations Other Than War, one of which is to assist local government tasks in accelerating development, so there should be no other perceptions,” Agus clarified.
