JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Chief of Naval Staff (KSAL) Laksamana TNI Muhammad Ali has revealed that the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) on the Republic of Indonesia Ship (KRI) Canopus-936 remains high despite the vessel being constructed through collaboration with Germany.

“This survey ship is also equipped by Abeking Rasmussen with sensors originating from European countries. However, the TKDN of this ship has already reached nearly 60 percent or more,” said Ali at the Kolinlamil Dock, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Monday (11/5/2026).

Ali hopes that in the future, Indonesia can build similar ships independently domestically.

The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) officially welcomed the arrival of KRI Canopus-936 at the Kolinlamil Dock, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Monday (11/5/2026) after the ship completed a 57-day voyage from Germany to Indonesia.

The arrival of KRI Canopus-936 was greeted by TNI Commander General TNI Agus Subiyanto, Deputy Minister of Defence (Wamenhan) of the Republic of Indonesia Air Marshal TNI (HON) (Ret.) Donny Ermawan Taufanto, Chief of Naval Staff (KSAL) Laksamana TNI Muhammad Ali, along with several high-ranking TNI and TNI AL officials.

Ali stated that KRI Canopus-936 was built through collaboration between Indonesia and Germany by PT Palindo Marine in Batam and the Abeking & Rasmussen (A&R) shipyard in Germany.

However, the ship is also prepared to support submarine search and rescue operations or as a submarine rescue vessel.

“So this will be the first submarine rescue ship we have. The submarines themselves will be built in the UK, and they will arrive next. Hopefully next year or in two years. Insha’Allah, it will arrive in June 2027,” said Ali.

KRI Canopus-936 is equipped with various high-technology underwater sensors, such as remotely operated vehicle (ROV), autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), as well as underwater drones and surface drones.

In addition, this ship also has deep-sea and shallow-sea survey capabilities, including surveys in coastal areas using two small ships carried on board.

In humanitarian operations, KRI Canopus-936 is capable of conducting search and rescue (SAR) missions, including emergency signal detection and object searches on the seabed.

Regarding the operation of the ship, Ali assured that TNI AL personnel have undergone training in Germany for seven months.

Previously, they also received hydrography education and training in various countries, including in Indonesia.

According to Ali, the presence of KRI Canopus-936 will strengthen Indonesia’s underwater survey capabilities.

To date, the TNI AL has had two modern survey ships, namely KRI Spica (934) and KRI Rigel (933).

He added that KRI Canopus-936 will be under the TNI AL Hydro-Oceanography Centre (Pushidrosal) and will be used for surveys across all Indonesian waters, including in Ekspedisi Jala Citra activities.
