Tito Karnavian Affirms Relocation and Accelerated Temporary Shelter Construction for North Aceh Residents
Muhammad Tito Karnavian, head of the Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in the Sumatra Region, has affirmed the government’s efforts to expedite relocation and the construction of adequate housing for flood-affected residents in North Aceh Regency.
Tito stated that the government does not want any residents to remain living in tents for an extended period. He emphasised that temporary shelters (huntara) must be built immediately so that communities can live more comfortably while awaiting permanent housing (huntap).
“I want temporary shelters to be built as quickly as possible — proper ones. People should no longer be living in tents, because tents are uncomfortable,” he said in a written statement on Friday (20 February 2026).
He made the remarks during a working visit to Kareung Hamlet, Buket Linteung Village, Langkahan District, North Aceh, on Friday.
He explained that communities residing in flood-prone settlements classified as high-risk areas would be relocated to safer locations. According to him, relocation is the safest measure to prevent residents from being affected again should a similar disaster occur.
“Relocation means that everyone previously in the ‘red zone’ will be moved out. If everyone is relocated, then everyone must receive permanent housing,” he stressed.
On this occasion, Tito also outlined the post-relocation housing construction scheme. For residents who choose to build on their own land, the construction process will be coordinated with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
