Time for truth

From Sinar Pagi

The history of national soccer has been soiled by Jakarta police security officers and the Jakarta military. Prior to the recent tear gas incident at Senayan Stadium, national soccer games had not been marred by an excessive reaction on the part of security forces. The shameful incident should not have happened if security officers had displayed self-control.

Now, the related parties, members of the police and the armed forces as well as the organizing committee of the final matches of Liga Indonesia III have started washing their hands.

They pretended to ignore the source of the tear gas. They even blamed the public, particularly bonek supporters from Surabaya.

I strongly concur with lawyers who intend to sue the parties connected with the Liga Indonesia matches. If necessary, sue them all -- The Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI), the Jakarta Police and the Jakarta Military,

The police and the military should not continuously fuss over the boneks (hooligans) and neglect their own duty. It is shameful. I ask the Jakarta Police and the military to account for their acts. Do not blame others. It is the common people who suffer. The Jakarta Military District Commander clearly said at the Senayan Stadium that if Armed Forces' members were at fault, firm measures would be taken against them. We are now waiting for Pak Sutiyoso's firm measures.

Police and military presence at soccer matches is important for general security. But they should realize they should be better prepared than the public in facing a situation.

The commanders should not equip their troops with pistols, combat knives, etc. Electric cudgels would do. Police dogs are also adequate protection. This way the public will be quiet. The important thing is safety in the country at present, not war.

I request the security forces to study the situation. Please do not equate soccer hooligans with rioters.
