TikTok and Roblox Officially Banned for Indonesian Children Under 16
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Transformation (Komdigi) has officially prohibited children under the age of 16 from owning social media accounts. Indonesian children are now unable to use TikTok or Roblox. According to detikEdu, on Friday (6 March 2026), Komdigi announced the measure via its official Instagram account @komdigi. Minister Meutya Hafid said the rule would limit access to high-risk social media accounts for those under 16.
‘This means Indonesia becomes the first Western-style country to delay digital access for children according to their age,’ Meutya commented.
The rule is set out in Ministerial Regulation Number 9 of 2026, a derivative of the TUNAS PP, which is due to be issued on 28 March 2026. Meutya said the rule is motivated by the real and growing threats in the digital space, ranging from exposure to pornography, cyberbullying, online scams, and addiction.
‘The government is here so that parents no longer have to fight the giant algorithms on their own,’ she asserted.
The process of deactivating accounts already held by children is expected to proceed in stages.
‘We recognise that implementing this regulation may cause initial discomfort; children may complain and parents may be confused about how to handle their children’s complaints. However, we recognise that this is the best step the government must take amid the digital emergency,’ she stated.
