Three Rehabilitated Bornean Orangutans Released into East Kalimantan Forest
Three rehabilitated Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) released into a protected forest in East Kutai Regency on 24 June 2026 are reportedly active and thriving in the wild, according to the Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP). COP Director Daniek Hendarto stated in Samarinda that observations show the three individuals are actively exploring the area near their release point and have built nests not far from the site. The orangutans, named Bagus, Eboni, and Ruby, were transported from pre-release islands on 23 June and released the following day into the Gunung Batu Mesangat Protected Forest in Busang District. The release was a joint operation involving the East Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Kaltim), the Kelinjau Forest Management Unit (KPHP), and COP. Bagus was transported overland for eight hours and then by river for three hours from Bawan pre-release island in Berau Regency. Eboni and Ruby were moved from the nearby Hagar and Lambeng pre-release islands. Upon release, all three orangutans immediately climbed trees to heights above five metres and began exploring their new habitat, indicating their readiness for life in the wild. COP staff will continue to monitor the orangutans from dawn until they nest at dusk for approximately three months to ensure they successfully adapt to their natural environment.
