"content": "<p>Three rehabilitated Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) released into\na protected forest in East Kutai Regency on 24 June 2026 are reportedly\nactive and thriving in the wild, according to the Centre for Orangutan\nProtection (COP). COP Director Daniek Hendarto stated in Samarinda that\nobservations show the three individuals are actively exploring the area\nnear their release point and have built nests not far from the site. The\norangutans, named Bagus, Eboni, and Ruby, were transported from\npre-release islands on 23 June and released the following day into the\nGunung Batu Mesangat Protected Forest in Busang District. The release\nwas a joint operation involving the East Kalimantan Natural Resources\nConservation Agency (BKSDA Kaltim), the Kelinjau Forest Management Unit\n(KPHP), and COP. Bagus was transported overland for eight hours and then\nby river for three hours from Bawan pre-release island in Berau Regency.\nEboni and Ruby were moved from the nearby Hagar and Lambeng pre-release\nislands. Upon release, all three orangutans immediately climbed trees to\nheights above five metres and began exploring their new habitat,\nindicating their readiness for life in the wild. COP staff will continue\nto monitor the orangutans from dawn until they nest at dusk for\napproximately three months to ensure they successfully adapt to their\nnatural environment.<\/p>",
