Three Illegal Quarry Sites in Temanggung Closed Down
The Temanggung Regency government, Central Java, together with the TNI and Polri, closed three locations of illegal quarrying activities operating in Banguntapan hamlet, Kwadungan Jurang village, Kledung sub-district, on Thursday (26/2/2026). This aims to preserve the environment and enforce the rules.
The head of Kwadungan village, Sriyani, said that there were previously three quarry sites with a total area of about three hectares.
“Each quarry site is one hectare, so the total area of the three locations is about three hectares,” she said to reporters, Thursday.
The head of Kledung sub-district, Sumarlinah, said that the closure was carried out by installing prohibition signs and locking access roads to the locations. The aim is to prevent quarrying activities from resuming.
“This step is an effort to stop illegal mining which has the potential to damage the environment, especially the slopes of Mount Sindoro,” said Sumarlinah.
From her observations, the illegal mining activities at the three locations had been going on for about five years. However, they usually operate intermittently. The closure was carried out again because there were still indications of mining activities, although not on a large scale. (H-3)
The three mining locations are in the Leles and Banyuresmi sub-districts.
Environmental activist and Samin figure, Gunretno, was questioned by investigators from the Central Java Police regarding a report by mining entrepreneur, Didik Setyo Utomo. Didik accused Gunretno of obstructing mining activities.
A number of witnesses have been questioned to uncover the cause of the mining accident which is suspected of being triggered by mining methods that do not comply with procedures.
The joint SAR team managed to find the victim dead at a depth of approximately 4 meters at 10:00 p.m. local time.
On Sunday (13/4), illegal quarrying activities continued to operate in a number of villages in Sukolilo sub-district, Pati Regency.
The rejection was realized by reporting alleged corruption practices in the illegal mining activities to the Bogor Regency Prosecutor’s Office.
