Universitas Indonesia (UI) has intervened to investigate the alleged sexual harassment case in a Faculty of Law student chat group. UI is preparing sanctions, including expulsion, if violations are proven.

The Faculty of Law has received reports of the viral chat group conversation containing sexual harassment tones. FHUI strongly condemns all forms of behaviour that degrade human dignity and contradict legal and academic ethical values.

“Currently, the Faculty is conducting a serious, careful, and thorough investigation and verification. This process upholds principles of prudence and justice,” stated the Faculty of Law UI via its Instagram account, as seen on Monday (13/4).

16 Perpetrators Gathered in Forum

The perpetrators were gathered in a forum held at the DH UI Auditorium last night. The forum aimed to accommodate victims who wished to receive direct apologies from the perpetrators.

“Last night, a forum was indeed held at the DH UI Auditorium to accommodate victims who wanted to receive direct apologies from the perpetrators,” said Chair of BEM FH UI Anandaku Dimas Rumi Chattaristo to reporters on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

Sixteen perpetrators attended last night. In the forum, the victims expressed their disappointment and anger towards the perpetrators.

“There were sixteen perpetrators present last night. Regarding the victims’ responses, I cannot represent all their feelings and I respect what they feel, but certainly disappointment and anger encompass those who became victims,” he said.

Victims Demand Strict Sanctions for Perpetrators

Dimas stated that apologies alone are not enough. He believes strict sanctions favouring the victims are needed in this case.

“However, it must be emphasised again that apologies alone will not suffice; strict sanctions favouring the victims are needed in this case,” he said.

Dimas recounted that the forum was rowdy with cheers because the victims and other students were disappointed that their safe space had been violated. Nevertheless, the forum proceeded in a controlled manner with no physical attacks on the perpetrators.

“Rowdy and full of cheers feels like an expression of the victims’ disappointment, even anxiety, and other students’ concerns because their safe space was taken away by the perpetrators,” said Dimas.

UI Prepares Sanctions

The campus side emphasised that verbal sexual violence constitutes a serious violation. Currently, the investigation process is underway through UI’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (Satgas PPKS).

“UI asserts that every form of sexual violence, including verbal forms occurring in digital or offline interactions, is a serious violation of the university’s core values, the academic community’s code of ethics, and applicable laws and regulations,” said Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International Affairs Erwin Agustian Panigoro on the UI Depok campus, quoted by Antara on Tuesday (14/4/2026).

He stated that this process includes verifying reports, summoning parties, gathering evidence, and coordinating with related units at the faculty and university levels. Meanwhile, FHUI has taken initial steps such as internal investigations and summoning suspected involved students.

The Faculty of Law Student Representative Council has imposed organisational sanctions by revoking active membership status for several students, as stated in Decree Number 007/SK/BPMFHUI/IV/2026.

Erwin emphasised that if violations are proven in the investigation process, UI will impose sanctions in accordance with applicable provisions, including academic sanctions up to dismissal as a student, and does not rule out coordination with law enforcement authorities if criminal elements are found.

UI ensures that the entire handling process is carried out professionally, independently, and free from intervention or conflicts of interest. Erwin said UI provides accompaniment to victims from psychological, legal, and academic aspects to ensure comprehensive recovery, and guarantees full protection of the victims’ identity confidentiality.

His side invites all parties to act wisely by not disseminating unverified information. This includes respecting the ongoing handling process to maintain the integrity of the process and protect all involved parties.

UI reaffirms its commitment to strengthening the prevention and handling of sexual violence through firmer policies, ongoing education, and responsive systems from a victim perspective, to ensure a safe and just campus environment.
