This NATO Country Secretly Aids Iran, Shares 'A1' Intel Against Israel
Hungary has reportedly offered to share intelligence information with Iran concerning Israel’s deadly 2024 pager attacks targeting Hezbollah members. This surprising step has raised significant questions about Budapest’s geopolitical position, long known as a close ally of Israel.
Citing a report from The Washington Post, as quoted by The Times of Israel on Wednesday (08/04/2026), a Hungarian government transcript reveals a telephone call on 30 September 2024 between Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In the conversation, Szijjarto mentioned that he would provide all intelligence information related to the attack to Tehran.
“In that conversation, Szijjarto informed Araghchi that Budapest’s intelligence service had conducted an investigation and would share all the information gathered regarding the explosion incident,” the report states.
Szijjarto’s communication effort to Araghchi occurred shortly after thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded in Lebanon on 17 September. The tragedy killed at least 12 people and injured nearly 3,000 others, with Hungary becoming implicated because a Taiwanese company claimed the devices were produced by a Hungarian company under licence.
Szijjarto sought to distance Hungary from the attack and assured Araghchi that the devices had no physical connection to his country.
“The pagers were not produced in Hungary, they were never in Hungary, and no Hungarian company has ever had any physical dealings with these pagers. So we have nothing to do with it!” Szijjarto emphasised in the transcript.
In response to the cooperation offer, Araghchi expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the Hungarian government. However, it was not specified exactly what information Budapest would provide to Iran.
“I am very grateful to you for doing all this,” Araghchi told Szijjarto.
Hungary’s willingness to cooperate with Iran, a major supporter of Hezbollah, is seen as highly contradictory to the country’s official stance as one of Europe’s most loyal supporters of Israel. Budapest has frequently defended Israel in international forums and maintained very close relations with Israeli leadership as well as the United States (US).
Even in March, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly supported Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban ahead of upcoming elections. Netanyahu described the strong Hungarian leader as standing firm like a rock in supporting Israel.
Similar support came from US Vice President JD Vance, who visited Hungary on Tuesday. At a rally supporting Orban, Vance stated that his presence in Budapest was to assist the prime minister’s campaign.
“I am in Budapest to help him in this campaign cycle,” Vance said on Tuesday (07/04/2026).
A former White House official told The Post that while Hungary may be trying to ease tensions with Tehran following the attack, this step contradicts the pro-Israel policy they have promoted.
“Hungary is one of the most supportive of Israel in its official policy. They are one of the few countries that consistently vote with the US when other European countries choose to abstain,” the official revealed.
