This is the Reason Said Iqbal Cancelled the Major Labour Demonstration at the DPR on May Day
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Labour leader Said Iqbal has revealed the reasons behind moving the planned May Day demonstration in front of the DPR RI to Monas in central Jakarta to join other labour masses.
President of the Indonesian Confederation of Trade Unions (KSPI) and President of the Labour Party, Said Iqbal, stated that the reason KSPI workers will join the May Day action at Monas on Friday (1/5/2026) is because President Prabowo Subianto has fulfilled the workers’ request to meet and discuss labour issues and aspirations on May Day.
“There is a reason why KSPI is moving the May Day action plan on 1 May 2026, which was initially planned in front of the DPR RI building, to Monas in Jakarta, and that is because President Prabowo has agreed to meet and discuss with us,” said Said Iqbal in a press conference on Wednesday (29/4/2026).
Additionally, the reason for changing the action point to Monas is that workers want crucial issues to be answered directly by the President during May Day at Monas.
“The second reason why the KSPI May Day action is being moved from the DPR to Monas in Jakarta is that out of 11 issues and aspirations, there are several crucial issues that are very important for Indonesian workers that must be answered and affirmed by the President, which of course is progress or follow-up on the requests, aspirations, and issues brought by KSPI,” he explained.
Said Iqbal estimated that hundreds of thousands of workers will come to May Day at Monas, with 50,000 KSPI workers coming from Jabodetabek, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, Greater Bandung, and parts of Greater Cirebon.
“There will be 50,000 labour masses from Jabodetabek, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, Greater Bandung, and parts of Greater Cirebon,” he clarified.
In this May Day action, the workers will bring several demands, such as the ratification of a new Employment Bill (RUU Ketenagakerjaan), abolition of outsourcing and rejection of low wages (HOSTUM), ratification of the Asset Seizure Bill (RUU Perampasan Aset), labour tax reform, and improvement of welfare for ride-hailing drivers (ojol) and honorary teachers.
