Chairman of the Satgas Percepatan Rehabilitasi dan Rekonstruksi (PRR) Pascabencana Sumatera, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, has insisted the government targets that all disaster refugees in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra no longer live in tents before Eid al-Fitr 2026. The drive is being achieved through accelerated construction of temporary housing (huntara) and the distribution of various social assistance such as the Dana Tunggu Hunian (DTH). ‘Whatever we do, we are trying. Yesterday we held a meeting so that before Lebaran our target is that there are no more refugees in tents,’ Tito said in a press release received by Kompas.com on Friday 6 March 2026. He spoke during a visit to a huntara in Pidie Jaya, Aceh, as part of a handover of aid to survivors of hydrometeorological disasters. He explained that the government continues to push the relocation of refugees from tents to huntara or through the DTH scheme. Tito noted that the number of refugees living in tents has continued to fall significantly. He said the current figure is around 6,000, down from about 11,000 a week earlier. ‘From last week around 11,000, now around 6,000. Our target before Eid al-Fitr is that they have moved into huntara or used the housing waiting funds,’ he said. In addition to accelerating the construction of temporary housing, the government is also preparing logistical support for survivors during the transition period. In the near term, food needs for refugees will continue to be funded by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) before the social assistance scheme from the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) is fully implemented. During the visit, he also reviewed several models of temporary housing built by various parties. Tito explained that huntara facilities differ in character, ranging from those built by BNPB, Danantara, and the Ministry of Public Works (PU) to housing created through cooperation between communities and volunteer organisations. ‘For example, BNPB huts do not have beds, but have kitchens and toilets of their own. Meanwhile those built by Danantara and the Public Works Ministry include beds and fans, but the kitchens and bathrooms are communal,’ he said. On the Pidie Jaya visit, Tito was accompanied by Social Minister (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf, Aceh Deputy Governor Fadlullah, and the Director General of Regional Administration (Adwil) Safrizal ZA of the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri).
