This Is How PO Sinar Jaya Keeps Ticket Prices Affordable
PO Sinar Jaya, a bus operator, has long been a staple in the public mind as a provider of intercity and interprovincial (AKAP) coach services at very affordable prices. In the midst of fierce competition in Indonesia’s bus industry, which loves to flaunt luxury fleets, Sinar Jaya remains consistent with its economical pricing. Founder Rasidin Karyana, popularly known as Pak Haji, bluntly explains that the company adheres to a fundamental philosophy in setting its operational fares. So, how does a PO with official route permits numbering over 1,000 units manage to continually press ticket prices down even when operating costs in the industry are rising?
One of the biggest challenges for bus operators today is the fluctuation of the Rupiah against the US Dollar. This rise naturally raises concerns about potentially pushing up periodic maintenance costs and prices of essential bus components, from oil to tyres. However, Sinar Jaya has a fortress to weather the economic blow. The secret lies in their internal management, which relies on independence in procuring spare parts. By prioritising the availability of components in‑house, Sinar Jaya is able to cut the external distribution channels that typically inflate maintenance costs for commercial fleets.
Moreover, management is even prepared to refrain from taking large profits in order to maintain the purchasing power of their loyal customers. ‘Tickets can be affordable for passengers who want to ride with Sinar Jaya at a price that isn’t too high,’ he added. Sinar Jaya’s ability to control spare parts prices and reduce operating costs is, in fact, inseparable from the group’s own ecosystem. Sinar Jaya is known to have a business network as an official dealer of commercial vehicles from the chassis manufacturers they use. ‘Sinar Jaya itself also runs dealers for Hino and Mercedes, you know. We should just prioritise our core business,’ Pak Haji said. Through this upstream-to-downstream business ecosystem, Sinar Jaya achieves highly competitive cost advantages in the transport industry. The efficiency in procuring new units as well as regular spare parts is kept much more in check compared with other POs that must rely entirely on third parties. Ultimately, this giant efficiency is returned to the public in the form of friendly ticket prices, in line with their initial commitment to always be ‘the people’s bus’.
