The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) of Jakarta has completed evacuation operations at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) following a waste pile landslide that occurred on Sunday, 8 March. A total of 13 individuals have been identified as victims of the incident.

Desiana Kartika Bahari, head of the Jakarta SAR office, confirmed that all reported missing persons have now been found. “The SAR operation has been concluded after the last victim, Riki Supriadi, was discovered on Monday at 23:30 WIB,” she stated in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March.

According to the latest data, of the 13 victims, seven have been confirmed deceased whilst six others have survived. All deceased victims have been evacuated to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for medical handling and final identification before being returned to their respective families.

The tragedy has provoked a strong response from the central government. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has stated that the Bantargebang facility is currently in a state of systemic emergency. The accumulation of 80 million tonnes of waste over 37 years using open dumping methods is deemed to have violated Law No. 18 of 2008 and disregarded human safety considerations.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry is now conducting a thorough investigation into the failure of Jakarta’s waste management system to prevent further loss of life. The incident is regarded as more than a mere technical accident but rather a reflection of systemic governance failure by the Jakarta provincial administration.
