There Are 3,703 Level Crossings in 2025, 912 Unsupervised
Level crossings have once again become a contentious issue following the train accident involving KA Argo Bromo Anggrek and the KRL Commuter Line at Bekasi Timur Station in Bekasi on Monday night (27/4/2026). One of the figures spotlighting the level crossing problem is DPR Commission V Chairman Lasarus, who is pushing for their closure. “We have already warned that level crossings are extremely dangerous and have triggered multiple train accidents in Indonesia,” Lasarus stated in his remarks on Tuesday (28/4/2026). Based on data from KAI obtained by Lasarus, there were 3,896 level crossings recorded in 2025. Of that number, 2,803 were registered and 1,093 were unregistered. Additionally, 1,832 crossings were supervised, while 971 were unsupervised. By early 2025, the number of level crossings had decreased to 3,703 points, comprising 2,776 registered crossings and 927 unregistered ones. Then, in December 2025, 1,864 level crossings were supervised, whereas 912 points had no supervision. He hopes the government will promptly conduct a thorough evaluation of the railway system’s operations in Indonesia, particularly regarding level crossings. “As we know, train tracks should be clear and clean, with no obstacles or hindrances allowed on the railway lines,” Lasarus emphasised. “This has the potential to cause accidents if not addressed quickly. Therefore, we from DPR Commission V hope that such incidents do not recur; enough with today’s accident and those in the past,” said the politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). As the head of DPR Commission V, Lasarus also conveyed his deepest condolences for the train accident at Bekasi Timur. “May the victims’ families be granted strength and resilience. And to the on-site personnel, ensure and prioritise handling the victims to receive the best and optimal care,” Lasarus stated.
