The Road Is No Arena for Ego; Drivers' Mindsets Must Change
Road safety on the highways is not judged solely on driving ability but also on the mentality and attitude of drivers behind the wheel. The road, as a public space, demands that every road user possesses ethics, empathy, and a sense of responsibility towards others.
Marcell Kurniawan, Training Director of Real Driving Centre, said there are still many drivers who act arbitrarily on the road. Ranging from cutting in suddenly, forcing their way through in congested traffic, to fleeing after being involved in an accident.
“Once we are behind the wheel, it means we have the risk of becoming a killer. So drivers must always stay vigilant, obedient, and aware while driving,” Marcell told Kompas.com, on Saturday 23 May 2026.
He explained that many drivers still regard the road as a place to vent their emotions or chase personal interests. Indeed, every small decision while driving can have a large impact on other road users.
Marcell believes driving etiquette should begin to be instilled from simple acts. For example, giving other vehicles a chance to change lanes, not forcing one’s way through a queue, and staying stopped and responsible if an incident occurs on the road.
Moreover, empathy is also considered an important factor in creating safer and more orderly traffic. Drivers need to realise that all road users have the same right to feel safe when driving.
“If everyone only thinks of themselves on the road, the potential for conflicts and accidents will surely be greater,” he said.
