Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Seoul, South Korea, on 31 March, after concluding a state visit to Japan.

During the visit, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung bestowed upon him the Mugunghwa Order of Honour — the highest accolade, previously awarded to US President Donald Trump — as a symbol of the utmost diplomatic respect. This reflects the profound importance of this summit for both nations.

The meeting can be interpreted in three dimensions: reaffirmation of a mutually trusting partnership amid geopolitical turbulence; deepening of defence and energy cooperation as two pillars of an expanded security agenda; and declaration of an AI and digital partnership that advances beyond manufacturing.

The greatest achievement of this meeting is the elevation of bilateral relations to a “Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” — the first for both countries. With the addition of the “comprehensive” element, this partnership now encompasses the entire spectrum of cooperation — politics, economy, security, to culture — and places relations between the two nations at the highest level ever achieved. This is not mere diplomatic rhetoric, but a substantive enhancement rooted in trust.

Amid a multifaceted crisis marked by intensifying US-China strategic competition, protracted conflicts in the Middle East, and global supply chain restructuring, both countries reaffirm themselves as reliable middle-power partners.

South Korea serves as a pillar of the rules-based order in Northeast Asia; Indonesia does the same in Southeast Asia. They need each other. This relationship is built on a long accumulation of trust: 53 years of diplomatic relations since 1973, and economic engagement that began in 1968, when Indonesia became South Korea’s first foreign investment destination.

Complementing each other in industry and resources, and increasingly vital in strategic positioning, the two countries now emerge as joint architects of stability and prosperity — precisely the kind of partnership required in this era.
