The Era of 8 GB RAM is Over, Microsoft Recommends 32 GB for Gaming PCs

The 8 GB RAM capacity appears to be truly obsolete for PC gamers. Microsoft recently published a Windows hardware guidelines document for 2026, which was unfortunately deleted just one day after posting. In that document, Microsoft stated that 16 GB RAM is now merely the minimum threshold. The Windows maker now recommends 32 GB RAM as a ‘worry-free’ configuration that is safe for the future. In other words, 32 GB memory capacity is no longer considered excessive by Microsoft. This recommendation is not without reason, given that the September 2025 Steam Survey data shows that 32 GB systems are increasingly popular, although 16 GB users still dominate. Unfortunately, this increase in standards is occurring amid a global memory shortage often dubbed the ‘RAMageddon’ or ‘RAMpocalypse’ crisis. To address this shortage crisis, several manufacturers, such as ASRock, Intel, and TeamGroup, have even proposed a new memory solution called HUDIMM. This generous capacity will help systems store more processes in memory and reduce dependence on the much slower page file. Additionally, graphics cards (GPUs) with limited VRAM, such as those with only 8 GB capacity, will greatly benefit from system RAM when processing heavy workloads. The same applies to users of the latest APU series like Ryzen AI 400. These processors must be paired with high-capacity and high-speed memory to maximise the performance of their integrated graphics.
