Thailand to review INRO membership
BANGKOK (Reuters): Thailand plans to review its membership in the International Natural Rubber Organization (INRO), a senior agriculture ministry official on Thursday.
This followed Thailand's failure to convince INRO to amend its market intervention rules to let the organization buy rubber at higher prices, Sanit Samosorn, deputy director-general of the agriculture department, told Reuters in an interview.
Sanit said he would recommend to the agriculture minister next week on Thailand's membership.
"I will recommend in the proposal that we should review our membership status...whether we should remain or not... as Thailand pays a lot to the organization but gets little support."
Thailand is the world's top rubber producer and exporter and its exit would have serious ramifications for the organization.
